Members Lounge - Presenting … Social Life in Pre-Separation Queensland
Starts: 19 Feb 2025 at 1:00 PM
Ends: 19 Feb 2025 at 3:00 PM
Notes: TOPIC: Let's Play - No more Dull boys named Jack: - Social Life in Pre-Separation Queensland.

This event will be held ONLINE only. Jennifer Harrison, our guest speaker, will be preseenitng online.

GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Jennifer Harrison, who will be presenting via Zoom

Dr Jennifer Harrison is a research fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland following a career mainly based on history and biographical research. One of her main interests has been the worldwide input of the ‘Coming of the Strangers’ to nineteenth century Queensland. Tracing the origins of these pioneers - convicts, British soldiers, farmers, explorers and a complexity of others - raised many intriguing questions leading to much travelling over many years seeking answers. These research adventures have been a delight, as has investigating her own extended family connections which had its Australian genesis in 1792. In the years between February 1842 and December 1859, the thousands who pioneered the newly opened acres of north-eastern New South Wales embraced opportunities to off-set hard work with stimulating activities to fill their leisure hours. Those who elected to put down roots obviously decided to follow the mantra: ’I choose to make the rest of my life the best of my life’, rather than ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. This presentation is intended to complement last year’s contribution which examined their continued communication with the rest of the world. Now, we will investigate and identify who instituted social pursuits and how they achieved their aims. Further, what pastimes became available and what was the role played by access to delights generated by community attractions as diverse as music, literature, entertainment, education, religion, sport, holidays, food, politics and pets. No doubt, these considerations may valuably be applied to all incoming populations to any district.

Presenting... times vary between 1pm and 7.30pm Please check the calendar carefully. You are welcome to attend as a visitor.

Note: This event is held in QLD time, AEST: no daylight saving. (GMT+10)

Please register your planned attendance whether you are attending in person or online.

Members Lounge - Talking About … Ferries.

Members Lounge - Talking About … Ferries.
Starts: 26 Mar 2025 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 26 Mar 2025 at 12:00 PM
Notes: THIS EVENT WILL BE HELD ONLINE.

Ferries were one of the earliest forms of transport in all capital cities except Adelaide. Join us on a ""cruise"" from the colonal era to current times, along rivers and bays. Perhaps the Brisbane or Bremer rivers, or Moreton Bay.

Perhaps we will be aboard the S S Experiment or the S S Koopa. Which ferry wharf will we be leaving from? Will it be Circular Quay or Redcliffe Jetty?

Who built your passenger ferry or vehicular ferry, and is it motivated by horse, cable, steam, diesel or electricity?

Will we be passing under bridges or encountering navigational hazards or floods?

As the saying goes, it's not about the destination but the journey. Our experiences on this journey can embellish your knowledge of your ancestors' day to day lives.

Facilitator: Nancy Edwards from the Queensland Family History Society Inc.

Please note. This event does not have a presenter.
Social connection and learning will be promoted by a facilitator providing discussion opportunities for the participants, through prompts, conversation and chat messages.

In some instances there may be a list of resources and the 'chat' emailed to participants after the event. The event will not be recorded.

As these sessions have a limited number of tickets to ensure everyone gets their chance to participate in the discussion, if you are booked and realise you are now unable to attend, please advise us so we can reallocate your ticket to someone on the waitlist.

He is the Webmaster of the popular "Australia @ War" web site at www.ozatwar.com which contains everything you would want to know about military activities in Australia during WWII. Peter's research has made him realise that very few authors and historians have covered much detail about events that occurred on the home front during WWII. Peter has published 7 E-books on WWII in Australia.

Peter was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in January 2020 “for service to community history”. Peter is the Secretary of the Aviation Historical Society of Australia (Qld) Inc. which meets monthly at Archerfield Airport.

Peter grew up in Townsville and played in the bunkers and hangars left over from WWII. He went on to join the Air Training Corps and then the RAAF Reserve at Garbutt Airfield in Townsville in the mid to late 1960s. He relocated to Brisbane in January 1970 to continue his engineering degree at the QIT.

Peter will share details and photos of numerous military camps and depots located around Brisbane during WWII.

Members Lounge - Presenting … The Beginnings of Qld Railways

Ends: 21 May 2025 at 3:00 PM
Notes: This event will be held online and in-person at the QFHS Family History Research Centre i.e. a HYBRID meeting.

Guest Speaker: Greg Hallam. Greg will be attending at the Research Centre

Topic: The Beginnings of Queensland Railways, in the 1860s It will be 160 years in July 2025 since the first section of railway line opened in Queensland (31 July 1865). Greg Hallam, Queensland Railways historian, will once again tell us the history of Queensland Rail. Charles Douglas Fox, the son of Sir Charles Fox, had read of railways in Norway, and travelled to see what was being achieved in providing an ‘economic’ steam locomotive operated railway, and also to investigate its adaption for the Southern and Western Railway in Queensland. The Foxes used their cross ‘North Sea’ experience with the 1067mm (3’6”) gauge when they endorsed it for Queensland in 1863. The Norwegian equipment was also used as a model when specifying the equipment for Queensland and for the 1067mm gauge railway. The first locomotives that entered service on the Southern and Western Railway were identical to the Avonside engines that were used on Norwegian railways in the early part of the 1860s - although unlike the Norwegian engines that were tank engines, the Queensland engines were tender locomotives.

Members Lounge - Social - Qld Muslim Museum, Holland Park

Members Lounge - Social - Qld Muslim Museum, Holland Park
Starts: 26 May 2025 at 10:00 AM
Ends: 26 May 2025 at 12:30 PM
Notes: The Qld Muslim Museum is located at: 309 Nursery Road, Holland Park.

Housed in a hall adjacent to the historic Holland Park Mosque, the Queensland Muslim Museum was inaugurated on 12 March 2017. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the history and contributions of Muslims in Queensland. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits that highlight the significant role Muslims have played in the state’s development, from the early Afghan cameleers to the diverse community of today.

The Holland Park Mosque, established in 1908 by Afghan cameleers, is the oldest mosque on Australia’s East Coast and a pivotal spiritual hub for Brisbane’s Muslim community. Originally housed in a traditional Queenslander style home, it was later replaced by a modern brick structure in 1966 to accommodate the growing community. This iconic mosque, renowned for its continuous operation for over a century, also serves as a vibrant community centre hosting social events, educational programs, and cultural activities.

The mosque and museum together serve as a testament to the enduring presence and integration of Muslims in Australian society. The museum’s establishment within this historical site underscores the commitment to preserving the rich heritage and fostering a deeper understanding of the Muslim community’s contributions to Queensland’s cultural fabric.

As we will be shown through the mosque please bring a scarf or shawl to cover your head and shoulders in the mosque, and as a show of respect, please wear slacks.

You may have an heirloom christening gown, a debutante gown, an aunt's belt, a father's dancing pumps, a grandfather's gym shorts, or your grandmother's unmentionables.

What does your item add to your family history? Who made it and who wore it? Where and when was it worn? Does it help you describe your ancestor? Are there any photos of it?
Do you have a photo with clothing that tells a story? Maybe a black armband, or a tennis outfit.

This will be an opportunity for you to share items from your collection that enthuse you.

The presentation will consider how stories of women tend to be overshadowed by the stories of our male pioneers. It will also consider the uncomfortable subject of illegitimate pregnancies and the dire consequences these often had for women in our families. Members of the Vallender family eventually emigrated from Gloucestershire to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and even to France.

If you have a cyclone or hurricane story from your own experience or your family history research, we will be interested in hearing your story. While we are chatting we might discover some new resources for our research.

Members Lounge - Presenting … Researching your Convict Ancestors
Starts: 20 Aug 2025 at 1:00 PM
Ends: 20 Aug 2025 at 3:00 PM
Notes: This event will be held online and in-person at the QFHS Family History Research Centre i.e. a HYBRID meeting.

Guest Speaker: Ann Swain

After serving their sentences, many of the 160,000 convicts transported to Australia went on to become leading members of their community, but it was not until the 1988 bicentennial celebrations that having convict ancestry was considered special rather than something for families to be ashamed of and not talk about. In fact many Australians have family stories of convict ancestry, or discover some when they start researching their family history, and, because convicts were government’s responsibility, surviving records for them are often more comprehensive than for free settlers. In her talk, Ann will provide a brief history of transportation to Australia; discuss researching families during the convict period; and illustrate with examples the use of some of the records to discover more about the convicts themselves and their activities.

Ends: 17 Sep 2025 at 3:00 PM
Notes: This event will be held online and in-person at the QFHS Family History Research Centre i.e. a HYBRID meeting.

Guest Speaker: Dr Roger Wilkinson AM

Dr Roger Wilkinson will chat about the four doctors who accompanied explorer Sir Douglas Mawson to Antarctica. Three medicos went on the first Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14 - Drs ‘Archie’ McLean, Evan Jones and Leslie Whetter. Dr. W.W. Ingram was the doctor on the British, Australian, New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) of 1929-31.

Roger will uncover the backgrounds of all four men and put them into their places in the expeditions. There follows a detailed discussion on the medical aspects of both expeditions and the medical supplies available to the doctors.

The AAE found Antarctica to be a fearsome and dangerous but beautiful place and mapped considerable areas of land in the vicinity of their two bases.

BANZARE was a much more sedate and somewhat less risky venture in that they had two summer voyages mapping coastline. It was during this voyage that Mawson formally annexed the Australian Antarctic Territory for King George the Fifth.

Contributing to the broad family history community - online and offline - can return unexpected benefits to you.

There are many advantages to joining the contributing community including building new friendships, having a sense of purpose, connecting with others in meaningful ways and keeping your brain active.

When we look specifically at genealogy, there is the potential to find a missing jigsaw piece to your family tree, acquire knowledge, learn through volume how to use crowdsourcing platforms better, and to hone your existing skills.

What is your favourite way of contributing? Are you a member of the Voluntrove community, a Wikipedian, or a transcriber for FromThePage? Or have you found your niche closer to home as a volunteer on one (or more than one) of the QFHS teams?

Please come along and share with us which programmes have benefited from your volunteering, and in turn have enriched and fulfilled your own life.

Facilitator: Nancy Edwards from the Queensland Family History Society Inc.

Social connection and learning will be promoted by a facilitator providing discussion opportunities for the participants, through prompts, conversation and chat messages.

In some instances there may be a list of resources and the 'chat' emailed to participants after the event. The event will not be recorded.

Family historians also know that newspapers are indispensable for adding detail to family history. We are fortunate that so many free digital newspapers are available. Each newspaper site or platform has similarities to and differences from other sites, but there are some principles you should know about when searching newspapers. For example, when was the long s (also known as the medial s or initial s) used, and how can we search for words that may contain the long s.

This presentation will look at some present key issues that will assist you in your search, no matter what site you are using.

Ends: 15 Oct 2025 at 3:00 PM
Notes: This event will be held online and in-person at the QFHS Family History Research Centre i.e. a HYBRID meeting.

Guest Speaker: Dr Jennifer Harrison

On 10 Feb 1842 the Moreton Bay penal colony was declared open to free settlers. Who came? And Why? More importantly what was luring these pioneers? How did they get here? Did they stay?

This presentation seeks to explore how a former penal colony transitions to a town? Those who populate your research came in the years before Separation from New South Wales in December 1859 but during this relatively short period each batch of years held its own attractions and disadvantages.

Let’s look at initial development and appreciate how intrepid, strong yet foolhardy and trusting our forebears were.

After the presentation our new 2025 Pre-separation Group members will be presented with their certificates.

Author Jane Smith launched her latest book at Connections 2025 earlier this year - it is the true story of convict Hannah Rigby.

'With meticulous research and engaging writing, Jane Smith not only creates a fascinating portrait of the extraordinary life of the truly unstoppable Hannah Rigby, but also deftly situates it within a richly-textured tapestry of early colonial life in Australia, in all its cruelties, characters, and complexities.' Sophie Masson AM, award-winning author.

One Free Woman tells the compelling true story of the only female convict to stay in Moreton Bay when the penal settlement closed – a woman who notoriously served three separate sentences of transportation, including two at one of the harshest establishments in the country.

Jane is an author, editor and librarian/archivist. She writes fiction and non-fiction for all ages; find out more about her books here. In 2024 she was honoured to be a Visiting Fellow of the Harry Gentle Resource Centre (Griffith University), awarded to support her research into convict Hannah Rigby.

Her books will be available for sale on the day.
