Talking about ...

Talking AboutTalking abouts ... are a chance to engage with like-minded others through questions, answers, and discussion. Do you want to learn more about one of these avenues? Have you already used them? Can you suggest another avenue? Come along and share your experiences. This broad discussion of the avenues open to us and your interests may lead to further Education events.

A "Talking About" session is a discussion group where everyone is given the opportunity to contribute by sharing their knowledge and experience, through asking questions and/or giving opinions and answers. It is not a presentation. It is open to all levels of experience; no question is too silly to ask. Although under the Members Lounge umbrella, the "Talking About" events are not exclusive to members of QFHS.

Talking about ... Memorialisation

Presenter: Facilitator: Nancy Edwards

How do family historians find and use memorials? Is a family tree a form of memorialisation?

"Memorialization is the way we give shape to memory. It is the conscious act of creating a legacy for a person, an event, or even an idea, translating our internal recollections into a shared, physical, or experiential form. This process allows us to hold onto what is meaningful, to honor what has passed, and to give it a permanent place in our lives and communities.

"It can be as personal as planting a tree for a loved one or as public as a national monument. At its heart, this is a human practice of marking significance, of saying, “This mattered.”
