Notes: Our last book club for the year will be a HYBRID event i.e. IN-PERSON or ONLINE. A zoom link will be sent out to those who can only attend online a couple of days before the event.
Author Jane Smith launched her latest book at Connections 2025 earlier this year - it is the true story of convict Hannah Rigby.
'With meticulous research and engaging writing, Jane Smith not only creates a fascinating portrait of the extraordinary life of the truly unstoppable Hannah Rigby, but also deftly situates it within a richly-textured tapestry of early colonial life in Australia, in all its cruelties, characters, and complexities.' Sophie Masson AM, award-winning author.
One Free Woman tells the compelling true story of the only female convict to stay in Moreton Bay when the penal settlement closed – a woman who notoriously served three separate sentences of transportation, including two at one of the harshest establishments in the country.
Jane is an author, editor and librarian/archivist. She writes fiction and non-fiction for all ages; find out more about her books here. In 2024 she was honoured to be a Visiting Fellow of the Harry Gentle Resource Centre (Griffith University), awarded to support her research into convict Hannah Rigby.
Her books will be available for sale on the day.
The Book Club events are Members Only events. Non-members are encouraged to have a look at all of the activities of the society. In particular, check out the Members Lounge webpage where all members only events are listed. If you feel keen to attend these activities, please join us.
