GUEST SPEAKER: Dr Jennifer Harrison who will present on Zoom only

Dr Jennifer Harrison is a research fellow with the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at The University of Queensland following a career mainly based on history and biographical research. One of her main interests has been the worldwide input of the ‘Coming of the Strangers’ to nineteenth century Queensland. Tracing the origins of these pioneers - convicts, British soldiers, farmers, explorers and a complexity of others - raised many intriguing questions leading to much travelling over many years seeking answers. These research adventures have been a delight, as has investigating her own extended family connections which had its Australian genesis in 1792. In the years between February 1842 and December 1859, the thousands who pioneered the newly opened acres of north-eastern New South Wales embraced opportunities to off-set hard work with stimulating activities to fill their leisure hours. Those who elected to put down roots obviously decided to follow the mantra: ’I choose to make the rest of my life the best of my life’, rather than ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. This presentation is intended to complement last year’s contribution which examined their continued communication with the rest of the world. Now, we will investigate and identify who instituted social pursuits and how they achieved their aims. Further, what pastimes became available and what was the role played by access to delights generated by community attractions as diverse as music, literature, entertainment, education, religion, sport, holidays, food, politics and pets. No doubt, these considerations may valuably be applied to all incoming populations to any district.
