GUEST SPEAKER: Allan Tonks

ALAN TONKS WILL BE PRESENTING IN PERSON AT RESOURCE CENTRE

Allan Tonks is an amateur historian with a passion for hiking, heritage, and family history.  He graduated in 1990 from the University of Waikato (New Zealand) with a Bachelor of Arts in history, and soon after moved permanently to Queensland.

Allan contributed a chapter titled 'The Rigby family during the First World War' to the 2020 publication STEPHENS and WAR, which was produced by the Annerley Stephens History Group with support from the RHSQ.  He has since given a number of presentations on his favourite topic, Americans at Mount Coot-tha during WWII.

Allan Tonks will consider future tourism potential at just a few of the many WWII sites across Queensland. Topics likely to be covered in this presentation are:

  1. False Cape;
  2. Charleville: Looking beyond the Secret Base;
  3. Charlie's Hill: Site of the WWII RAAF Station 211
  4. Julia Creek’s crumbling RAAF ruins
  5. Brisbane’s own WWII Mount Coot-tha sites.
