Non-Brisbane residents who are financial members of a society with whom we have a reciprocal arrangement -

  • enjoy visiting rights and unrestricted use of our library and resources free of cost, similar in all respects to QFHS financial members.

QFHS financial members who do not reside locally in the city of a society with whom we have a reciprocal arrangement -

  • enjoy visiting rights and unrestricted use of the other society's library and resources free of cost, similar in all respects to their financial members.

Reciprocal visitors will be expected, on arrival, to produce to the duty library assistant -

  • satisfactory evidence of residency and
  • current membership of a participating society when registering to use the library.

QFHS enjoys reciprocity with these societies -

*As of 1 July 2005 SAGHS members swipe a perpetual plastic membership card through a reader to access their library. The new card does not display an expiry date and therefore SAGHS members wishing to access the QFHS library under the reciprocal arrangements between the two societies will need to obtain a letter of introduction on SAGHS letterhead prior to their visit at Gaythorne.    Top of page

Library Equipment : Usage and Malfunctions

(A polite request): Please take care when using equipment in the Library. Sometimes equipment faults are caused by mishandling or carelessness. For example:

  • a broken fan might be due to unnecessary pressure on the controls, and

  • the photocopier might  jam for the unsuspecting operator if not cleared by a previous user.

Some donated equipment is often near impossible to repair due to age and unavailability of replacement parts. In these situations, there is no alternative but to dispose of unserviceable items (to the detriment of members and users of the Library). Should you become aware of faulty equipment please advise the duty Library Assistant so it can be checked as quickly as possible.    Top of page

A small charge applies for private use of the telephone for outward calls. See a Library Assistant. See other details for the library telephone number.    Top of page

The Society is continually upgrading and installing additional computer equipment to provide members with free access to email and the Internet. With the growth of  computer-based genealogical data, this method of researching your family history is proving a real boon to members.

Existing research resources have also been greatly expanded with the purchase of a large number of CD-ROMs, giving the Society one of the largest genealogical CD-ROM collections in Australia.

The library and resource centre also now provides desktop publishing equipment for the benefit of members wishing to turn their manuscript into an award winning, professionally printed version of your family's history. Try it out soon.

Details of all library additions (print and microform) are published in the Society’s quarterly journal, Queensland Family Historian.    Top of page
