Computer Training Courses, 2010

Do you want to know how to make best use of the computer-based resources at the QFHS library? Perhaps you would like more information on family history research in the Internet. In 2010, the Society will be holding two computer training courses to introduce the use of computers in family history research. Each course comprises two sessions. One course will be held in the first half of the year; and will be repeated in the second half of the year with all sessions being held at the QFHS library at Gaythorne.

Please note these courses are offered to QFHS members only.

Saturday, 6 March 2010 from 9am - 12 Noon
    'CD-based resources at Gaythorne'
The aim of the session is to familiarise participants with the layout of the computer room, the types of resources available, and how to access these resources.

Saturday, 1 May 2010 from 9am - 12 Noon
    'Check These Out!
This session will introduce just some of the many genealogical sites on the Internet. The session will cover the use of search engines, Internet security, the range of resources available, and how the information available is collected.

Please note that due to limitations in computer hardware, both of these sessions will be in a demonstration mode, as we do not have the facilities at this time for a hands-on approach. The numbers are limited to 16 places at each session. If you are not confident in the use of computers and the Internet, there is an optional introduction at starting at 8.30 am on both Saturday, 6 March and Saturday, 1 May.

More sessions will be held on Saturday, 7 August and Saturday, 4 September.

The cost is $11 per session; however, if you are a library assistant, the cost is $2.75 per session. Both prices include GST. Should you wish to attend either or both of these sessions, please email Sue Reid on: smreid@tpg.com.au   Top of page

12. The National Archives of Australia

Like many government agencies worldwide, the National Archives of Australia (NAA) is facing major budget cuts. Recently, the NAA has been asked to cut several million dollars from its annual budget.

Unlike archives in some other countries, NAA is not trying to digitise every document in its collections. Instead, the NAA waits for someone to request a document or a series of documents, digitises those records as soon as possible, then sends the digital images to the requestor.

You can read more about the issues the National Archives are facing at: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/02/25/2829779.htm?site=thedrum

13. Major Release of Personal Data from UK 'War Time' National Register

The National Health Service Information Centre (NHS-IC) has announced the launch of a new fee-paying service giving access to data held on deceased individuals recorded on the 'National Register for England and Wales' originally compiled in 1939. This data is similar to census data in that it is arranged by household and includes basic details about the entire UK population (England & Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland) as it stood in 1939.

Accessing the National Register for England & Wales will cost £42 per enquiry and for this you will be provided with the full details about each individual at the same address as recorded in September 1939.

For more information on the service, go to: http://www.ic.nhs.uk/news-and-events/news/nhs-ic-launches-the-1939-register-service   Top of page

14. Early Irish Maps

The National Archives (UK) has made available for the first time online a collection of early Irish maps (c.1558 - c.1610).  They depict plantations, fortifications and townships from the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I.  The maps often name the local chiefs and major families in an area, providing useful information for family historians.  You can obtain more information at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/irishmaps.asp

15. Irish 1911 Census

The 1911 census is available on the Public Record site for free and the 1901 census will soon be available.

16. Genghis Khan and His Brood

Genghis Khan, the famous Mongolian emperor, has long been considered the father of the Mongolian nation, but modern DNA evidence traced his legacy far beyond his imperial borders. In 2004, Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes identified him as "the most successful alpha male in human history," leaving his mark on the genetic blueprints of more than 16 million people alive today.

17. March Merriment

Do I even WANT ancestors? Some I found I wish I could lose.
Do I need a Genealogical Search Warrant to see the records?
Do our ancestors have bad heir days?
Documentation - The worst part of genealogy.
Does a genealogist regard a step backwards as progress?
Don't confuse me with facts, my mind's already made up!
Don't judge me by my relatives, I didn't choose them!
Don't sit under the family tree with anyone else but me!
Eat... Sleep... Trace my roots.
Enough research will tend to support your theory.
Every family tree has some sap in it
Every man is an omnibus in which his ancestors ride.
Every time I find an ancestor I need to find two more!   Top of page
