We hold a unique photographic collection of 20,000 images of headstones in cemeteries throughout Australia and overseas in our George Bond Collection.
George Edwin Bond (1913-2011), a monumental mason, began photographing his work around 1985. As he wrote, "We monumental masons are a vain lot, proud of our own work and critical of others. I was so pleased to see how well my work had weathered the years." Read more.
This interest grew into photographing other headstones and other masons' work until George had a substantial collection of photographs. When the time came to have to find a new home for his collection, George offered them to QFHS and the Society gratefully accepted.
We hold photographs of some, but not all, of the headstones in these Queensland and other Australian cemeteries.
The George Bond Collection of headstone photographs is housed in our Cemetery Room. The photographs are arranged by cemetery; each cemetery in the collection has one or more albums.
You may make your own copies of the headstone photographs. Please do not remove the photographs from their albums.
If you cannot come to the Family History Research Centre, please make an initial enquiry about a particular headstone. Contact the George Bond Coordinator, giving as much detail as possible.
If your enquiry is successful, you may wish to purchase a digital copy of a the headstone photograph. George Bond Order Form
