Helen Smith

Helen is a speaker, researcher and author and has been researching family history since 1986 in Australia, England, Ireland, and Wales with forays into other areas of the world chasing after mobile family members.

She has regularly spoken since 1992 in every state and territory in Australia, and internationally in New Zealand, Canada, USA, England at such conferences as RootsTech, Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference, Virtual Genealogical Association conference, Who Do You Think You Are! Live, and aboard 17 Unlock the Past cruises. She is a regular presenter for LegacyFamilyTree Webinars.  

Helen started the Genealogical Society of Queensland DNA Special Interest Group in 2015 and regularly runs classes on DNA and its application for genealogical research. She has a strong interest in public health, medical history, and social context.

She is the author of Death Certificates and Archaic Medical Terms, Google the Genealogist’s Friend, and numerous family history articles. Professionally she is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists and Genealogical Speakers Guild.

Helen holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, a Bachelor of Applied Science Medical Laboratory Science, an Associate Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Techniques, a Diploma in Family History, and a Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies.
