Helen Lucas

Helen Lucas is the Diocesan Archivist for the Townsville Catholic Diocese and the Townsville Catholic Education Office. She was Honorary Foundation Archivist for the Catholic Diocese from 1986 and was appointed Archivist for the Diocese and the Catholic Education Office in 2004. She has cultural history degrees from New England University, Armidale, NSW and James Cook University, Townsville.

Helen worked for thirteen years as an historian in the Townsville Office of the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage. She later worked as a member of consultancy teams preparing Heritage Conservation Plans. She was appointed to the Queensland Heritage Council in 2004, serving four years on the Council and as a member of the Development Sub Committee of the Council.

Researching and writing the history of the Catholic Diocese of Townsville has been a key part of her role as Diocesan Archivist. Another aspect of her role has been to reach out to the community making the history of the Diocese available to all, particularly students and family Historians.

Helen was President of the Townsville Family History Association for four years from 1997 and a member since 1983. She is married with three adult children, six grandchildren and a husband who worked in Catholic education for fifty-five years.
