Doug Elms has been actively researching his family history for more than 25 years and has found that his ancestors are from nine English counties. He also has a German grandmother. He has had the delight of standing in every church in which his ancestors have been baptised, married or buried. One of his joys has been to put his hand on the font in which his seven times great grandfather was christened.
Doug uses Family Tree Maker (FTM) as a means of recording the family information. He started using the program with version 6 in 1986.
Doug joined the VicGUM committee in 2009 and was appointed President in 2011.
He presents many workshops on FTM and over the last two years and, in conjunction with John Donaldson, has visited many regional centres to deliver the workshops.
In his other life, Doug is a mechanical engineer and started his own consulting engineering practice in 1982 after 22 years in the industry. In December 2015, he finally acknowledged that he had enough and 'retired'. He is yet to find out what retirement means.
