This event will be held online and in-person at the QFHS Family History Research Centre i.e. a HYBRID meeting. Guest Speaker: Dr Roger Wilkinson Dr Roger Wilkinson will chat about the four doctors who accompanied explorer Sir Douglas Mawson to Antarctica. Three medicos went on the first Australian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14 - Drs ‘Archie’ McLean, Evan Jones and Leslie Whetter. Dr. W.W. Ingram was the doctor on the British, Australian, New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) of 1929-31. Roger will uncover the backgrounds of all four men and put them into their places in the expeditions. There follows a detailed discussion on the medical aspects of both expeditions and the medical supplies available to the doctors. The AAE found Antarctica to be a fearsome and dangerous but beautiful place and mapped considerable areas of land in the vicinity of their two bases. BANZARE was a much more sedate and somewhat less risky venture in that they had two summer voyages mapping coastline. It was during this voyage that Mawson formally annexed the Australian Antarctic Territory for King George the Fifth.
