Wal Stubbings (b.1913) worked on the wharves in Strahan, Hobart and Brisbane for 40 years. Militant workers like him were demonised and accused of wrecking the country. So what was it like to be a wharfie? Especially one who visited the USSR, demonstrated in street marches, caught the gaze of ASIO, became a champion athlete, and lived to 101? Co-author, Lesley Synge, will discuss his remarkable life and the challenges of bringing a life story to completion. Wharfie is available to borrow from our library as well as from the Brisbane City Council Library. Visitors welcome.
