In genealogical terms, a stray is someone who has left behind in a region that is not the place where s/he was born a record of a personal event, such as a marriage, a death or employment etc. Such records may signal to a researcher an important source of information in some distant or unexpected place elsewhere. Imagine how many Australians, New Zealanders, Britons, Irish and other Europeans down through the centuries can lay claim to the title of being a ‘stray’!
