Research: Need some assistance?

The Queensland Family History Society Inc (QFHS) offers limited research assistance for family historians and genealogists and welcomes all enquiries.

All research is undertaken by the Honorary Research Officer (HRO) ably assisted by a small team of volunteer members - all of whom can draw on their own personal research skills and experience of more than 20 years, their knowledge of genealogy, and familiarity with the society's resources.

Researchers are however encouraged to conduct their own searches wherever possible by personally visiting our Gaythorne library and resource centre. You will be surprised by the extent of our holdings.

QFHS will only undertake searches of our own records.

The Society is unable to conduct research in other Brisbane repositories such as the National Archives of Australia (NAA), Queensland State Archives (QSA), Queensland State Library (QSL) and John Oxley Library (JOL). Searches of these repositories can be arranged by engaging the services of a professional researcher.

We will undertake brief searches of, and welcome queries relating to -

  • All QFHS indexes listed here
  • Members' interests register
  • Members' Pedigree charts
  • Microfilm records
  • CD-ROMs
  • Published and unpublished Hamburg passenger lists to Australian and New Zealand ports
  • Any other indexes, directories and hard copy (print) resources that are held by us.

Searches of our library catalogue by subject, name, author, title etc.

Appraisal of written research, advice on furthering own personal searches, and/or suggested points of contact to progress your research.

Professional research. As a service, the Society may provide you with a list of recommended persons willing to undertake research on a private fee-for-service basis. In this instance, QFHS takes no responsibility for any private research arrangements.

Experience has shown that this form of assistance often benefits researchers -

  • Who are just beginning their family history research
  • Those who have moved further on but are stuck at a certain difficult point and need some guidance, and
  • Researchers who may require the services of a Professional.

Generally speaking, anyone who seeks answers to very specific questions such as -

  • When/where was so-and-so born?
  • Whom and where did s/he marry?
  • When/where s/he died and was buried?
  • When did my ancestral convict arrive in Australia and on which ship?
  • Who held the licence of the such-and-such hotel in …….?
  • Can I obtain a particular certificate for my ancestor and how much will it cost?
  • Can I obtain a copy of the press article about the death of my relative that appeared in the Brisbane newspaper "………"?
  • Does your society have the following book/microfiche on ……?

If your research question is as simple as this, we suggest that best results will be achieved by completing our form and submitting electronically. It's quick and easy. Click here to access the form.

More complex research or requests for an appraisal such as example 3 above are best approached by writing to the society. This gives you the opportunity to include copies of additional and vital information that cannot easily be sent except by post. A form is provided for this purpose and may be accessed by clicking here. When you have printed the form, please complete and post. Also it's very important to include a stamped, self-addressed business size (DL) envelope. Attention to this point helps keep control over our expenses.

Essentially, best results are achieved if you -

  • state briefly your objective (eg I wish to establish how and when my great grand parents arrived in Australia, where they were residing, and how my great grand father was employed at the time my father was born)
  • clearly identify whom you are researching and support that information with whatever factual information you already have in your possession
  • include any surname spelling variations of the person/s being researched
  • write succinctly and to the point.

Remember too, that if you supply photocopies of certificates and documents with your request for assistance and other supportive detail such as a brief pedigree chart showing the family being researched, our HRO will have a better understanding of your objectives. This will also result in a much quicker turnaround of your request.

Details of results of our searches, including a list of the sources checked, both successfully and unsuccessfully will be provided. Where appropriate, the HRO will suggest further avenues of research available to you.

If you include an email address, our HRO will reply electronically otherwise you can expect to receive a written response in the mail.

All research queries will be attended to in order of receipt by volunteer members of the Society. While the Society cannot specify a time for completion of research, our objective is to supply you with some information as soon as possible depending on the number of requests receiving attention.

All research is carried out in good faith and while every effort is made to provide accurate information from the records available, the Society cannot guarantee the type of result hoped for, nor can it be held responsible for any mistakes made in transcription.

The Society operates as a non-profit organisation and therefore encourages, and indeed welcomes monetary donations. Income derived in this way goes towards increasing our holdings and allows us to continue providing research assistance for the benefit of all researchers - members and non-members alike. The Society however, reserves the right to make a charge for providing its research services, in which case clients will pay the rates as shown below -

Per Request Hourly Rate
Non members AUD$11 AUD$33
Financial Members AUD$5.50 AUD$16.50

(Above rates are subject to change without notice. Where the Society exercises its discretion to charge for its research service, the client will be billed at the current rate).

Where a posted reply is expected in Australia, a stamped self-addressed business size (DL) envelope must be provided with each letter. Overseas researchers must include reply paid postage (SSAE) or two international reply coupons (IRCs) with each letter. The researcher must meet any costs incurred to obtain certificates, computer printouts, microfiche copies and photocopying etc for which you will be billed.

Download a Donations form for our records and send to QFHS.

Donors, whose searches fail to produce a result, may elect to request a refund of their donation.

Costs incurred for the purchase of certificates, postage, computer printouts, microfiche copies and photocopies etc will be billed to you with advice as to the best method of making payment.

Finally, we wish you luck with your searches and hope that our research service may be called upon to advance your family history project.
