Licences: An Overview
The culmination of 20 years' research on 19th century Queensland hotels and publicans resulted in the production of a 3-part index giving details of — (1) hotels, (2) publicans’ names and (3) a list of towns giving licensees’ names and transfer dates for Queensland country. A Brisbane index, published by the Brisbane History Group, is complementary to the QFHS resource. Information has been
drawn from a variety of sources: Queensland Government Gazettes 1860 to 1900, Butts and Returns of Publicans' Licences (NSW) 1842-1860, Court of Petty Sessions (CPS) Books and other related material (Queensland State Archives), all available directories (used as secondary sources only), all relevant 19th century Queensland newspapers, miscellaneous information from various correspondents.
Now also available in the Queensland licences series is a digital version of three earlier indexes that have been produced on one CD: details of approx 180,000 licences listed in the Queensland Government Gazette from 1860 to 1901; 70,000 timber licence applications (1860-1901); 40,000 goldfields miners’ rights, miners and business licences (1870-1884), and 70,000 applications from 33 other
licence types (1860-1899). The indexes are directly searchable on name, year and licence details with QFHSdatasearch. This is an excellent resource for gathering information on family occupations and activities. Each index gives name, title, location, licence type, and the date and page of the Government Gazette reference, as well as other information specific to the index. Timber licences are
not limited to cutting and removing timber — they also include obtaining quarry material such as sand, gravel, road base, crushed aggregate and rock (among other products); the goldfields miners’ and business licences include various business types, with many of the licences taken out by women. Other licences cover numerous activities: selling postage stamps, occupations such as auctioneer and
surveyor, dealing in liquor and spirits (apart from publicans and licensed victuallers) and distilling from sugar for fortifying wine and even for scientific purposes! QFHSdatasearch is a generic interface designed to search genealogy databases and developed by the Queensland Family History Society Inc. This version features field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting and
wildcard searches.
