  • an endless number of card, microfilm, microfiche and computerised indexes

  • an ever increasing collection of CD-ROMs

If you have European genealogical interests, our "Guide to the Continental European Resources in the Queensland Family History Society Library and Resource Centre" is a very good buy. The second edition (January 2002), compiled by QFHS members Rosemary Kopittke, Jackie Buttress and Eric Kopittke, will lead you through our holdings which include books (library catalogue references provided) and microforms.

Getting started

Choose from the many microform resources listed below to track down that elusive ancestor. If using these resources searchers are well advised to purchase the family historian's companion titled "Guide to the Microform Collection in the Queensland Family History Society Library and Resource Centre" [compiled by QFHS members, R. Kopittke, D. Robertson & J. Buttress]. Users will find this publication very helpful as it provides comprehensive details of specific events, places and range of years covered by each resource. It also states whether records are available on film, fiche or CD etc.

Have you considered these sources?

Family history is made possible because we all have surnames and all family historians, be they professional genealogists or people exploring their own family tree, have to start their search somewhere. To start tracing your family tree, you should begin with the more recent events, which are to be found in family records such as births, deaths and marriages, and follow them back through the generations.

  • Indexes to Birth, death and marriage records
Generally speaking, certificates give you details of when and where these events occurred. Birth certificates will also give you parents' names, mothers' maiden name and occupation of the father; marriage certificates will give you the occupation, address and age of the couple; death certificates will give you the cause of death, and age of the deceased.

  • The International Genealogical Index™ (IGI) – 1538-1875 is a very good place to begin. It is an index of births, baptisms and marriages extracted from the Genealogical Society of Utah (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints™) microfilm project. The 1988 and 1992 editions are available on microfiche; the 1993 edition and updates on CD-ROM. The International Genealogical Index™ (IGI) – 1538-1875 is a very good place to begin. The 1988 and 1992 editions are available on microfiche; the 1993 edition and updates on CD-ROM.

  • Close to home, the Birth, death and marriage indexes for Queensland, other Australian States and New Zealand are on microfiche while CD-ROM versions are also available except for South Australia and the Northern Territory.

  • England and Wales Family Records Centre General Register Office (GRO, formerly St Catherine's House) indexes give birth, death and marriage details for the period 1837-1942 - microfilm and fiche.

  • Cemetery records : An extensive coverage of Queensland, other Australian States, New Zealand, England, Scotland and Ireland are available on microfiche and in book form. The George Bond Collection of photos of headstones in Australia are available in albums.

Other useful sources of information will be found by searching some very basic records and the following examples are intended as a guide to approach your searches.

  • You donate half the purchase costs

  • You can claim your share as a tax deduction

  • QFHS pays the balance and places the order

  • You have exclusive use of the resource for three months from acquisition date

  • After this time the resource is shelved in open access.
