Intestacies, Insolvencies & Wills: An Overview

Under the Intestacy Act of 1877 the Curator of Intestate Estates and his deputies were required to publish twice yearly in the Government Gazette a return of all estates they administered during the preceding six months. These resources provide alphabetical indexes to returns from 1896 to 1916 listing names, where died, birthplace, date and page reference in the relevant Queensland Government Gazette. The original entries also indicate the total amount received, paid, and invested for the estates of the listed persons. Aliases are indexed when they occur. Where died — although administered in Queensland, many places outside Queensland, are included — NSW, Tas, Vic, WA and SA; Irish, English and Scottish towns; China; Molpea, Portuguese East Africa; British New Guinea and the USA. Birthplaces are an invaluable item given by these returns — they include the expected Australian states, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Also listed are China, Canada, NZ, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, USA, South Africa, New Guinea. West Indies, India, the Baltic States, Poland, Afghanistan, Syria, Singapore, Ceylon, South Sea Islands, Japan, Philippine Islands, Channel Islands and more.

Also now available in digital format are indexes to all Queensland Government Gazette notices relating to intestacies, insolvencies and wills 1859-1916. The CD also includes, where found, other associated notices, an index to intestacy returns 1896-1910, scanned images of Gazetted source pages, and an index to Supreme Court Brisbane Originating Summonses 1901-1906. Searching the indexes by name, year and other details is made easy using the popular searching and sorting capabilities of our very own developed QFHSdatasearch interface. Features include field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, wildcard searches and, when applicable, links to the source images for intestacy returns. These three indexes provide a valuable guide to death related and other legal information for the period.

Highlights of the main index: approx. 87,000 entries listing name, residence, occupation, type of notice, court, date and Gazette reference. All persons in each notice are indexed, including executors, administrators and trustees, to provide as complete a coverage as possible of those involved. Gazette notices may contain further information, eg relationships to others mentioned in the notice and, for insolvencies, the dividends declared. The intestacy index of approx. 31,000 entries lists name, where died, where born, court, and Gazette reference. The notices also indicate the total amount received, paid and invested for the estates of the listed persons. The Supreme Court index of approx. 4,000 entries includes residence, occupation and notes on the nature of the summons. View the images in Acrobat Reader (free and downloadable).
