Queensland Cemeteries Monumental Inscriptions: Pine Rivers District

This CD presents, as a single pdf file, inscriptions on headstones and plaques in five old cemeteries in the Pine Rivers District, as transcribed, indexed and compiled for publication during 2001 and 2002 by Rosemary Kopittke. The material has been previously released as a set of two microfiche by QFHS; this re-release on CD makes the resource much more accessible and allows searching of the text of the full publication using Acrobat Reader.

The five cemeteries covered are Bunya Cemetery (Bunya Road, Bunya); Dayboro Cemetery (McKenzie St, Dayboro); Lawnton Cemetery (Norfolk Ave, Lawnton); Samford Cemetery (School Rd, Samford Village); and Samsonvale Cemetery (Golds Scrub Lane, Samsonvale). The earliest inscription (Samford) relates to the death in 1866 of John Charles Richards, infant son of Thomas and Elizabeth Richards. Bunya Cemetery is no longer in use but Dayboro, Lawnton, Samford and Samsonvale Cemeteries all have recent burials. As well as the inscriptions, the file includes a combined index to all names referred to on the inscriptions and a sketch map of each cemetery, showing its sections. The entries cover approximately 2,500 people and the file represents 149 pages of inscriptions, maps and index.

The material on this CD is a valuable resource for family history research in the district, especially as time and vandalism take their toll on the headstones. As well as confirming or showing possible errors in the burial register, the MIs often show family relationships for 3 or 4 generations, including names of people not buried in the grave. Details can include parents, birth place and date, marriage information, titles and honours. Neighbouring plots can include related families.

This CD is the third in the QFHS Queensland Cemeteries Monumental Inscriptions series with files in pdf format, following those for Beenleigh, Redlands and Cleveland districts and for Bulimba, Brisbane.
The material on this CD is a valuable resource for researching Queensland farming families. Where possible the two indexes to 1800's information cover not only the owner, but also show and describe the brands in the search results, while the linked images of the Gazette lists show the actual symbols. For horses and cattle the index entries show whether a new registration or transfer, while for sheep the indexed lists are of all current registrations. Brands were registered under the relevant acts, and images of these are also included on the CD. The directory index covers name, address and page reference to the main section of the Queensland Brands Directory 1949-1952 (Parts I to VIII), with some additional owner information. Full brand information is in the original entry (not on this CD).

Commonwealth Electoral Roll (Qld) 1949 *

This CD indexes the details from the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls for electors registered in Queensland in 1949. The entries for the approximately 756,000 electors cover name, title, sex, place of living, occupation, roll number, subdivision and division. The index allows direct searching on name, place of living and the other details with QFHSdatasearch.

The material on this CD is a unique source of public information on individuals. It covers all electors recorded in the rolls held in the National Archives of Australia (i.e. all registered electors for Queensland except those who would have been listed in the unavailable supplementary rolls for Fisher Division) and lists all the information recorded in the rolls. Enrolment and voting were compulsory, so Queenslanders from all walks of life are included. The 1949 roll was compiled after a redistribution of electorates and the CD includes maps showing the new Division boundaries. Combining the range of information with the search specifications and sorting facilities in QFHSdatasearch can be especially useful for locating family groups, for example by specifying a surname and sorting on place of living within subdivision. The CD is the fifth in the series being produced by QFHS for the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls (Queensland). The earlier ones (1903, approx. 230,000 electors; 1913, 362,000 electors; 1922, 419,000 electors; and 1934, 570,000 electors) have been extremely popular with family historians and other historical researchers, illustrating just how valuable these sources are.

QFHSdatasearch features field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, and wildcard searches. It can be run in conjunction with databases on CDROMs or installed to hard disks, and has the capability of merging and managing large numbers of disparate data formats. The underlying data is held in a Microsoft Access database that is encrypted and password protected. For detailed information please contact QFHS.
