Queensland Brands Index 1872-1900 and Directory 1949-1952*

This CD provides three indexes covering approximately 60,000 horse and cattle brands and 17,000 sheep brands listed in the Queensland Government Gazette for 1872-1899 and 1877-1900 respectively, and approximately 79,000 entries for horses and cattle in the Queensland Brands Directory 1949-1952. The indexes can be directly searched on name, year and other details with QFHSdatasearch, which also provides direct links to images of the Queensland Government Gazette lists for the horse and cattle brands and for the sheep brands, viewable with Acrobat Reader.

The material on this CD is a valuable resource for researching Queensland farming families. Where possible the two indexes to 1800's information cover not only the owner, but also show and describe the brands in the search results, while the linked images of the Gazette lists show the actual symbols. For horses and cattle the index entries show whether a new registration or transfer, while for sheep the indexed lists are of all current registrations. Brands were registered under the relevant acts, and images of these are also included on the CD. The directory index covers name, address and page reference to the main section of the Queensland Brands Directory 1949-1952 (Parts I to VIII), with some additional owner information. Full brand information is in the original entry (not on this CD).

Genealogical index to Australians and other expatriates in Papua New Guinea 1888-1975

This CD presents as a pdf file the index compiled by Joan Ainsworth in 1981 to a wide range of records relating to Australians, Germans, Pacific Islanders and other expatriates in Papua New Guinea. It was previously published on microfiche by the Queensland Family History Society in 1992, originally titled Some Expatriates of Papua New Guinea. This re-release on CD makes the resource much more accessible and allows searching of the text of the full publication using Acrobat Reader.

The material is presented in five parts:

1. Cemetery Records: Monumental inscriptions for 15 cemeteries: the old Port Moresby Cemetery Register 1912-1969: and transcriptions of memorials from six churches and war memorials.

2. Miscellaneous Records: Change of name: Civil officials and prisoners of war deported to Australia 1914-1915: firearm permits 1891-1895: naturalisations 1947-1956.

3. Probate Notices 1888-1975: From five different government gazettes: includes Notice to Creditors and Orders to Administer Estates by the Curator of Intestate Estates.

4. Transcriptions of BDMs: Transcriptions of the birth, death and marriage notices from seven newspapers.

5. Alphabetical Index: A complete alphabetical index to the four earlier parts.

The full index covers approximately 15,000 people, with multiple sources for many, and the full file represents over 600 pages of indexes and other information.

This material on this CD is a unique and extremely valuable resource for research on expatriate families in Papua New Guinea. It covers a total of 38 sources from across the country, with some information such as the monumental inscriptions no longer available as time and vandalism have taken their toll on headstones. With very few Papua New Guinea records available, this CD is an essential resource for researchers with Papua New Guinea interests.

Commonwealth Electoral Roll (Queensland) 1934

This CD indexes the details from the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls for electors registered in Queensland in 1934. The entries for the almost 570,000 electors cover name, title, sex, place of living, occupation, roll number, subdivision and division. The index allows direct searching on name, year and the other details with QFHSdatasearch.

The material on this CD is a unique source of public information on individuals. It covers all electors recorded in the rolls held in the National Archives of Australia (i.e. all registered electors for Queensland except for approximately 280 people whose portions of the rolls are not available or unreadable) and lists all the information recorded in the rolls. Enrolment and voting were compulsory, so Queenslanders from all walks of life are included. The 1934 roll was compiled after a redistribution of electorates and the CD includes maps showing the new Division boundaries. Combining the range of information with the search specifications and sorting facilities in QFHSdatasearch can be particularly useful for locating family groups, for example by specifying a surname and sorting on place of living within subdivision. The CD is the fourth in a series being produced by QFHS for the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls (Queensland). The earlier ones (1903, approx. 230,000 electors, 1913, 362,000 electors; and 1922, 419,000 electors) have been extremely popular with family historians and other historical researchers, illustrating just how valuable these sources are.
