QUEENSLAND SCHOOL PUPILS’ INDEX CD Part 3 with QFHSdatasearch Version 1.6.

QSPI Part 3 indexes approximately 340,000 names drawn from 200+ Queensland schools. The three CDs combined cover almost 900,000 names from 600+ schools – about 25% of admissions. Dates for this CD range from 1870 to 2004 with a 30 year closure, as recommended by Education Queensland, when names were extracted directly from Admission Registers. Schools range in sized from large city ones with admissions in the thousands to small country one-teacher schools with a total enrolment of hundreds. Some schools have long ceased to exist; others are still functioning.

Sources from which the names are drawn are diverse - actual school admission registers, school histories covering a significant anniversary (Jubilee, Golden, Centenary) in the life of a school, and local histories which don’t focus on the school but include a pupil list as part of their story. Many sources provide additional information on the family including age at admission, birth date, parents’ names and occupation, religion, address.

QFHSdatasearch is a generic interface designed to search genealogy databases and was developed by the Queensland Family History Society Inc. This version features field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting and wildcard searches.

QUEENSLAND GAZETTED LICENCES INDEX 1860-1901 with QFHSdatasearch V1.6

Three indexes to details of approx 180,000 licences listed in the Queensland Government Gazette from 1860 to 1901. Covers 70,000 timber licence applications (1860-1901); 40,000 goldfields miners’ rights, miners and business licences (1870-1884), and 70,000 applications from 33 other licence types (1860-1899). The indexes can be directly searched on name, year and licence details with QFHSdatasearch.

This is an excellent resource for accumulating information on family occupations and activities. Each index gives name, title, location, licence type, and the date and page of the Government Gazette reference, as well as other information specific to the index. Timber licences are not limited to cutting and removing timber — they also include obtaining quarry material such as sand, gravel, road base, crushed aggregate and rock; the goldfields miners’ and business licences include various business types, with many of the licences taken out by women. Other licences cover numerous activities: selling postage stamps, occupations such as auctioneer and surveyor, dealing in liquor and spirits (apart from publicans and licensed victuallers) and distilling from sugar for fortifying wine and even for scientific purposes!

Commonwealth Electoral Rolls (Queensland) 1913 with QFHSdatasearch V1.6

This is an index of approx 362,000 entries from the Commonwealth Electoral Roll showing all electors registered in Queensland in 1913 — the last year before the major population shifts caused by World War I. Entries cover name, sex, place of living, occupation, roll number, subdivision and division. Electoral redistribution changes and Divisional boundaries of the day are also included. Although registration was not compulsory in 1913, most people eligible to enrol did so. This is a comprehensive record providing all information found in the rolls held in the National Archives of Australia.

QFHSdatasearch allows direct searching on name, year and other details. Combining the range of information with the search specifications and sorting facilities can be particularly useful for locating family groups; eg specify a surname and sort on place of living within a subdivision. This version of QFHSdatasearch features field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, wildcard searches and, when applicable, links between search results and images held in pdf files of the source records.

This is an excellent starting point for researching families living in Queensland.

Guide to the Microform Collection in the Queensland Family History Society Library and Resource Centre

This publication (book or CD) is a guide to the myriad microform and computer based records held in our library. Although complete details are published regularly in the Queensland Family Historian, a consolidated listing of resources has proved useful. The aims of this publication are to make researchers more aware of the extensive resources available thus enabling them to plan and utilise more effectively their time spent at the library.

Records have been grouped together into categories within geographical divisions – usually countries subdivided into counties or states as appropriate. The categories have been selected to facilitate location of the records.
