An Act to Provide for the due Registration of Brands on
Horses and Cattle [Assented to 22nd January, 1872.] This Act provided for the
registration of brands for horses and cattle — to consist of two letters
and one numeral or two signs and one numeral. The same brand was to be used
for both horses and cattle. It became an offence to use a brand not registered
in accordance with the Act.
An alphabetical index to more than 21,000 owners of horse and cattle brands
registered or transferred between 1890 and 1899, lists the brand (where possible),
the certificate number, run or farm where brand was to be used, nearest postal
town, date brand listed and page reference in the relevant Government Gazette.
Changes of residence and corrections are also indexed. In addition, the Gazette

EDUCATION & SCHOOLS QUEENSLAND
QUEENSLAND SCHOOL PUPILS INDEX CD Version Part 2 with
QFHSdatasearch Version 1.6. This second CD consolidates into a single index microfiche Volumes 6
to 10 of the Queensland Family History Society continuing QSPI project, indexing
admissions and other school records in Queensland.
QSPI Part 2 indexes approximately 320,000 names drawn from 200+ Queensland
schools. Parts 1 and 2 cover approx 550,000 names from 400 schools – about
15% of all admissions. Dates range from 1865 with a 30 year closure observed,
as recommended by Education Queensland, when we extracted pupil names directly
from Admission Registers. Schools range from large city ones with admissions
in the thousands to small country one-teacher schools with a total enrolment
of hundreds. Some schools have long ceased to exist; others are still functioning.
Sources from which the names are drawn are diverse - actual school admission
registers, school histories covering a significant anniversary (Jubilee, Golden,
Centenary) in the life of a school, and local histories which don’t focus
on the school but include a pupil list as part of their story. Many sources
provide additional information on the family including age at admission, birth
date, parents’ names and occupation, religion, address. Schools are a
source we cannot afford to overlook!
The index can be directly searched on name, school and year with QFHSdatasearch
version 1.6 which is a generic interface designed to search genealogy databases
and developed by the Queensland Family History Society Inc. This version features
field oriented and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, and wildcard
searches.

| GOVERNMENT GAZETTES QUEENSLAND CONSOLIDATED INDEX 1859-1919 with QFHSdatasearch Version
1.5. A consolidated
index to all Notices in the Queensland Government Gazette 1859-1919 excluding
(in particular) notices relating to Intestacy, Insolvency and Wills and
Members of School Committees which have been published separately as major
QFHS indexes in their own right. The CD includes approximately 125,000 indexed
notices covering name, title, topic, location, volume, year and page(s) relating
to the entry. The actual Notice in the Gazette will provide additional
information, the exact nature of which will depend on the topic. The actual
entries give the full names of the persons referred to and many of the Trade
Mark and Patent Notices refer to people residing in the other Australian
colonies and overseas. Searching the index by name, topic, location and year
is made easy using the popular searching and sorting capabilities of our
very own developed QFHSdatasearch interface. Features include field oriented
and keyword searches, Boolean selection, sorting, wildcard searches and,
when applicable, links between search results and images held in pdf files
of the source records.
Government Gazettes contain a wealth of information on a wide range of
topics and finding information on particular individuals can be a daunting
task. Each volume has an index to its Notices, but no consolidated index
has previously been available to facilitate access. Researchers will therefore
welcome this CD to make the task of searching so much easier. |
