John Donaldson has been involved with family history since the 1980s.
In 1994 he purchased a copy of the first Windows version of Family Tree Maker—version 2. He has been using the program and its developments ever since.
He was accepted as a beta tester for Family Tree Maker (FTM) in 1996 and continued this role through 15 versions up to version 2014. He was asked to join the Ancestry FTM review group in 2005 as an alpha tester. This group advised the developers on the general direction of the programme and acted as peer reviewers.
He joined VicGUM in November 1996 and in March 1998 he commenced writing FTM articles for VicGUM, which he continues to do. In August 1999 he joined the VicGUM Committee. John also regularly responds to internet help for VicGUM members. In November 2011 he took over the role of Newsletter Editor and has been instrumental in growing the newsletter to a sought-after reference document.
In March 2013 he became a published author with his first book on FTM, titled So You Are New to Family Tree Maker.
