| 12. * HEADSTONE PHOTOGRAPHS - QUEENSLAND | ||
| If you are looking for
photos of headstones in Southeast Queensland, you must try http://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/ This marvellous site says: 'This collection of headstone and memorial photos is intended mostly to cover cemeteries for which there is no on-line lists of names. We hope that the photos of the headstones will help to provide a sense of place for those who can't visit the cemeteries personally. We are based in Brisbane (Queensland, Australia), and mostly that determines where we visit. We try to photograph all the memorials at a site. However if they are locked away out of sight, then we don't photograph them. The transcriptions of the memorial inscriptions is generally limited to the genealogical information. If you are aware of any such omissions, please contact us, and we will correct the completeness statement until we can re-visit. We can also add contact details to photos. Please note that the "photos" page will include thumbnails of all the photos, so may be slow to load. The number of photos is given in parenthesis. There is an FAQ.' Then follows a complete list of the many places covered and partially covered so far. This project is ongoing. Even if you have checked it out before, it could be worth doing so again. |
||
| 13. * BEWARE OF TWIST ON NIGERIAN SCAM TARGETING FAMILY HISTORIANS | ||
| Fair Trading Minister Margaret Keech warns Queenslanders of a new slant on the age-old Nigerian scam. "The scammers contact potential victims who have signed up for websites which help reunite family members from around the world," Mrs Keech said. "The scammers say that they knew your relative but they recently passed away or disappeared and have left behind a safe deposit box full of valuables which you can claim. "To collect the valuables you first need to pay a delivery fee, sometimes totalling several thousand dollars. Once the fee is sent, the promised valuables never appear. "Alternatively the scammers may ask for your bank account details but money goes out of, not into, your account. "You may also be asked for copies of your passport or driver's licence - opening the doorway to identity fraud." To report new scams or suspicious offers call the Office of Fair Trading on 13 13 04 or visit http://www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au/ | ||

| 16.* ANCIENT ROMAN NAMES | ||
| http://wordsmith.org/words/agnomen.html In ancient Rome, names of people typically had three parts: praenomen (given name), nomen (name of the clan), and cognomen (family name). Example: Gaius Julius Caesar. Sometimes, an additional fourth name, agnomen, was given to honor an achievement. These names were not substitutes for the real name, rather they were used in addition. Also, they were not inherited. Example: Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, given to mark his victories in Africa. |
||

| 18. * REALLY USEFUL SOURCES FOR UK & IRISH GENEALOGY ON THE WEB | ||
| A list of genealogy sources which was originally prepared for the benefit of newcomers to family history and to the Manchester and Lancashire FHS. For that reason explanations are provided which an experienced researcher would find superfluous, and abbreviations are usually given in full. Also, some of the sources relate specifically to Lancashire, though the great majority are of general interest. http://www.mts.net/~bydesign/RUS/Guide.htm | ||
| 19. * A-Z OF BRITISH GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH | ||

RESEARCH by Dr Ashton Emery. A concise guide to researching British ancestry both locally and at a distance. ||
| 20.* HYPERHISTORY ONLINE | ||
| HyperHistory is an expanding
scientific project presenting 3,000 years of world history with an
interactive combination of synchronoptic lifelines, timelines, and maps. A
novel synchronoptic concept depicts a full panorama of history in such a
way that it will appeal to a cultivated public at large. A true picture of
the world would be incomplete if it equates history with the history of
wars and politics and neglects all other aspects of life. The addition of
scientific, cultural and religious facts and events are therefore a key to
a fundamental knowledge of society. A spatial representation of time has
obvious educational advantages: here history is no longer learned but
viewed. See http://www.hyperhistory.com/online_n2/History_n2/a.html The Synchronoptic Concept is a timeline using visual art forms (maps, graphics, colours) in combination with textual information. Its main purpose is to convey a perspective of world historical events, and to enable the reader to hold simultaneously in mind of what was happening in widely separated parts of the earth. Because such a diagram makes it possible to see many things at the same time, it is called a Synchronoptic Chart. Synchronoptical means 'seeing at the same time', or more accurately 'Parallel Views' |

Virtual visits to the war grave site/memorial using photographic imagery and video footage of the cemetery/memorial and surrounding area are offered. Relevant history of the "Fallen" and the cemetery/memorial is included. A poppy cross or wreath can be laid at the site and a personalised inscription written into the Cemetery/Memorial Register. | 26. * STATE RECORDS NSW | ||
| We are indebted to SAG for
passing on this news and relevant tips: The latest additions to NSW State Records online indexes and resources include: Probate Packets series 3 (1875-1890) have now been added to State Records' "Archives Investigator". This brings the range of packets now searchable online to Series 1-3 (1817-1890), and part of Series 4 (currently June 1928 to March 1932 and January 1941 to June 1942). Many thanks to the volunteers involved! To search for a packet, use the above link, choose the 'simple search' option, and enter both the surname of the person you are searching for and the word "death", for example "davies death". Choose 'All words' from the Simple search options. This search will eliminate many of the extraneous results that you would otherwise get. Why does it work? The title of all probate packets contains the word death. Using an 'All words' search ensures that you don't miss people with middle names. For example, David Price Davies would be missed if you did an 'Exact phrase' search for David Davies alone. URL: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/investigator.htm Also new on the website is an index to Register of Firms 1903-22. The index records the name of each firm, the nature of its business, place of business, date of registration and the persons carrying on the business. The first of 24 volumes of the Register of Firms is now available to search here. This too is an ongoing volunteer project and will be of interest to local and family historians researching owners of firms registered under the Firms Act, 1902.
