6.  Can You Help?

We are in need of a few volunteers to help keep the QFHS Library Resource Centre operating to the highest possible standard.

Library Assistants - apart from aiding researchers, it is a wonderful opportunity to expand your own knowledge of what is available in books, on fiche and microfilm, as well talking to the researchers who may have experienced similar "brick walls" as yourself. Interested?  Please contact the Library Roster Organiser, Hazel Clark on (07) 3395 2587

Internet Sales Co-ordinator - As a temporary measure, Rosemary Kopittke is currently handling the sale of QFHS CDs on Ebay and via the QFHS website.  As we all realise, Rosemary is very involved in other QFHS activities and is unable to continue in the Internet Sales Co-ordinator.  Therefore we are seeking to a volunteer to take on this role. Rosemary is happy to provide information regarding the system used to co-ordinate the sale of CDs via the internet. Rosemary can be contacted on (07) 3376 4339.

10.  Linking Family History with Genetics - the Scientific Approach

Ann Swain is guest speaker for Caloundra Family History Research group, 1-4pm, Saturday 25 October, presenting "Linking Family History with Genetics - the Scientific Approach".

A basic understanding of inheritance mechanisms helps researchers bring out the interesting medical and personal characteristics of each family.

Since the discovery of the DNA double helix in the 1950s the information related to genetics has grown exponentially and become much more publicly accessible.  A comprehensive family history could include research on not only family photos, historical data, socioeconomic factors etc, but also the Y chromosome, mitochondrial DNA and inheritance of genetic disorders and tendencies such as asthma, heart conditions, cancer,  muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, to name a few.

Inheritance patterns detected can be used to alert subsequent generations to potential problems.  Work on the genome continues to rapidly improve our knowledge of our genetic heritage.  Using this information can only enhance our family histories.

In this talk Ann will present an overview of genetic procedures which will assist in understanding the How and Why of what makes each individual so unique.

Bookings are essential. Cost is $10 including afternoon tea.  It will be held at the Caloundra Guides' Hut, Arthur St, Caloundra.

To book or obtain more information call Eunice (07) 5492 3676 or Pam (07) 5477 6582 or Email: caloundrafamilyres@hotmail.com

17.  Cleghorn Family History Weekend - 11th & 12th April 2009

Among the many attracted to the prospect of wealth from Australia's Rocky River goldfields in the mid-nineteenth century were Scottish brothers William and Alexander Cleghorn, both born at Noblehouse, near Biggar,  south west of Edinburgh. All of their surviving siblings with their widowed mother, ended up in Australia - there to begin six lines of Australian Cleghorns. While many of the descendants of these Cleghorns remain in the New England area, one, Alexander established a Queensland lineage from Brisbane. Two of his sisters, Jessie (first at Cardwell and later at Ipswich) and Isabella (Brisbane) also contributed progeny.

A Cleghorn family history weekend is to be held in Uralla and Armidale, New South Wales, on Saturday, 11th April and Sunday, 12th April 2009 (Easter weekend).

A tour of sites associated with Cleghorn ancestors is being arranged, starting with the old goldfields. A letter from famed and revered author Robert Louis Stevenson to a member of the family, claiming kinship, will be on display, as will the fascinating letters William wrote to his fianc
Isabella to persuade her to join him in Australia.

Cleghorn descendants interested in participating should contact Alison Meldrum on :

23. findmypast.com Launches Online Parish Records Collection

UK family history website findmypast.com announced it has added the parish records from over 1,000 parishes across Britain to its existing collection of online family history records, offering online access to baptism, marriage and burial records dating as far back as 1538.

Over 15 million parish burial records and memorial inscriptions will be available to view at findmypast.com, with a total of 7 million baptism, marriage and probate records being made available online later this year. The parish records collection brings together in one easy-to-search central place the disparate records from local parishes.

The registers are particularly valuable sources of information for people seeking to research their family tree back further than the civil records of birth, marriage and death, which began in 1837, and the nineteenth century censuses.

You can search for your ancestor by surname across all the parish records on the site without needing to know where in the country they came from. Try your luck at: http://www.findmypast.com/

It is fully indexed and searchable in both English and French with original images available.  You can search the collection by name, province and district, age, gender, marital status, relation to head of family, country or province of birth, French-Canadian status, mother's and father's birth place, religion and occupation.

26.  You Know You're An "Addicted" Genealogist ...

... when you brake for libraries.
... if you get locked in a library overnight and you never even notice.
... when you hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery.
... if you'd rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping mall.
... when you think every home should have a microfilm reader.
... if you'd rather read census schedules than a good book.
... when you know every town clerk in your state by name.
... if town clerks lock the doors when they see you coming.
... when you're more interested in what happened in 1698 than 2008.
... if you store your clothes under the bed and your wardrobe is carefully stacked with notebooks and journals.
... if you can pinpoint Harrietsham, Hawkhurst and Kent on a map of England, but can't locate Bogantungan, Queensland.
... when all your correspondence begins with "Dear Cousin,"
... if you've traced every one of your ancestral lines back to Adam and Eve, have it all fully documented, and still don't want to quit!
