4.    Special Appeal for Indexing Help - Commonwealth Electoral Roll (Qld) 1959 - 100 years on.

QFHS Publications Committee is appealing to all members for assistance with this special project to coincide with the celebrations of 150 years of the State of Queensland in 2009.

All you need is enthusiasm and a spreadsheet program. Don't worry if you are a one finger typist and may be too slow as many of our current indexers just use one finger. Instructions and an example will be given to each indexer - the team is always available to answer any questions you may have.

Just one bundle (20 pages) by each member would see us reach our target of publication in 2009. Can you contribute a page of indexing per day (60 names, address and occupation) for just 3 weeks to enable us to complete this significant project?

We currently have a dedicated team of indexers but to complete this project on time a much larger group will be required. So if you think you would like to help your society and contribute to the Q150 Celebrations please contact the Publications Committee at:  indexing@qfhs.org.au

5.    Have Your Submitted Your Pre-Separation Story?

A wonderful opportunity has arisen which will enable everyone who has any family member who resided within the boundaries of the state of Queensland, before separation from New South Wales, to write a short story about them, and have these stories published in a new CD to be named Queensland Founding Families: Biographies of Families who resided in Queensland before separation from New South Wales.

This CD is to be published by the Queensland Family History Society Inc. to coincide with the Q150 Celebrations celebrating the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Queensland, and will be released on Queensland Day, the 6th June, 2009.

We therefore request everyone, whether members of this Society or not, who can supply conclusive evidence that their ancestors were in residence in this state prior to the 10th December, 1859, to submit a story about their people to be included in the abovementioned publication. Some form of evidence that each individual does qualify will need to be provided. This can be birth, marriage, or death certificates; shipping lists, newspaper stories, photographs of headstones or other genuine evidence. In the case of our original inhabitants, some form of proof that their people resided in the area in question will be required.

The Publications Committee requests that each story should be limited to no more than three A4 pages (12 point font) inclusive of any maps or photographs. A signed Permission to Publish form should accompany each submission.  Forms are available on request from the library assistants, or by email from - r.annand@bigpond.net.au

By preference, and to assist the Publications Committee compile these stories, please submit each entry by email attachment to - presep@qfhs.org.au

Or, should this not suit, then by mail to - QFHS Publications Committee, P.O. Box 1109, Brighton, Qld, 4017.

Please do not limit your stories to your direct lineage; we are looking for stories about every person who qualifies to be included. Of course this includes all indigenous people.

If you know of any person outside of this Society who has ancestors who could qualify, then please contact them, and have them also send their stories to be published. Our aim is to acquire as many stories as possible regarding the people who contributed towards the establishment of the State of Queensland.

Please do not delay in submitting your stories as there will be a large amount of work to be done by the Publications Committee, and we certainly wish to avoid any unnecessary rush of entries close to the cut off date of 31st December, 2008.

For further information contact: Bob Annand, Pre-Separation Group Coordinator via email on: r.annand@bigpond.net.au or phone (07) 3395 2530.

See http://www.qfhs.org.au/sigs.htm#Queensland for details of the Pre-Separation Group.

7.    Planned Reunion - Sacred Heart Convent, Yarraman

For more than twenty post-war years the Sacred Heart Convent in Yarraman was home to as many as 36 boys at a time. They boarded at the convent and attended the catholic primary school next door. On 8 June 2008 many former student boarders and their caring Sisters of Mercy will hold a nostalgic re-union.

The Sacred Heart convent was completed in 1945. The war was almost over and education was in a shambles due to teachers being conscripted for the war effort, so the Mercy nuns, a teaching order of the Catholic church took up residence in the convent and opened it as a boarding convent for boys. The first intake in June 1945 saw fifteen boys in residence. As many as 36 boys slept in the ground floor dormitory.

For the past ten years the convent has been the home of the Yarraman Historical Society. It is a museum and resource centre and is a magnet for former boarders and staff. They come 'home' to visit. Now known as Heritage House it will host the re-union on June 8.

Gaye Smith is one of the organisers of the re-union and would like to hear from former boarders. She can be contacted on (07) 4163 8137.

13.    www.theoriginalrecord.com

This amazing website now has 7.1 million entries directly available online with a free unlimited search facility. Recent acquisitions include:

1305-1342 Papal Letters - These are abstracts of the entries relating to Great Britain and Ireland from the Regesta of popes Clement V, John XXII and Benedict XII. This source is particularly valuable for Ireland, for which many of the key government records of this period are lost.

1625-1639 Somerset Quarter Sessions - The Reverend E. H. Bates Harbin prepared extracts from the Somerset quarter session records of 1625 to 1639 for publication by the Somerset Record Society (xxiv) in 1908. The period is covered by quarter sessions minute book 2 (part) and 3; these are based on the rolls of recognisances; criminal indictments; and the sessions rolls (which also supplied a hiatus in book 2 for most of 1627).

1683 State Papers Domestic - The State Papers Domestic cover all manner of business relating to Britain, Ireland and the colonies, conducted in the office of the Secretary of State, as well as other miscellaneous records.

1699-1700 Treasury Books - Records of the Treasury administration in Britain and the colonies, from August 1699 to September 1700. These include records of the appointment and replacement of customs officers such as tide waiters and surveyors.

1763-1766 Stamp Office Registers of Apprentices - Apprenticeship indentures and clerks' articles were subject to a 6d or 12d per pound stamp duty: the registers of the payments usually give the master's trade, address, and occupation, and the apprentice's name, as well as details of the date and length of the apprenticeship. 10 December 1763 to 15 July 1766: indexed for masters and apprentices (and trainee clerks) separately.

18.    Central Search added to Irish Genealogical Online Record Search System

The Irish Family History Foundation is delighted to announce that its all Ireland Online Research Service was launched on 12th March 2008.

The online data is comprised of almost 9 million Irish church and civil records of baptism, birth, marriage and death and these records are available to search for the first time on one database. The website has also undergone a redesign. Take a look at our all Ireland Search and search across all counties currently online of any combination that you wish.

The interactive county map on the website clearly shows the records held. The whole database can be searched or each county can be searched, even down to civil parish level.

County Cavan has recently been added. Further counties will go online in the coming weeks including Antrim, Donegal, Down, Sligo, Longford and Wicklow. They charge 10 euros a record. For further information go to: http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes

20.    Historical Ship Passenger Records from the UK to Australia 1890 - 1960 Go Online

For the first time Australians will be able to view passenger lists online from ships departing British ports on voyages to Australia during the 1950s at http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/  The 1950s is the final decade of passenger lists to be added to the now complete set of passenger list records from the United Kingdom to Australia spanning 1890 to 1960.

This comprehensive online resource has been developed in association with The National Archives of the United Kingdom, and will be an invaluable resource for Australians interested in tracing their ancestors who emigrated from the United Kingdom during the last century.

A total of 6.5 million Britons have immigrated to Australia since 1945, with one million people immigrating down under in the 1950s alone. Every ship passenger record contains the names of each passenger, the name of the ship, the date and UK port of departure as well as the destination port. The records also include the UK address, year of birth, marital status, occupation and nationality of each passenger, giving key details of information that could help uncover more branches of your family tree and further insights to your family
s history.

Previously these records were only accessible from The National Archives in London but now everyone can easily research their British ancestors
voyages over the internet from the comfort of their own home, from anywhere in the world.

The easily-searchable and user-friendly database will enable would-be genealogists and family historians alike to view digitised images of the original ship passenger records online, which contain over 1.1 million pages, listing the 24 million passengers who travelled on long-distance journeys from UK ports. It has taken a 125-strong full-time team over a year to complete the mammoth process of digitising the 164,000 original documents.

Have fun searching for your ancestors on: http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/
