You are encouraged to contribute items which you feel would be of general interest to the family historian hunting for that illusive relative. Humorous items and items relating to the technology of using computers in genealogy are also welcome. Submit your BRIEF items supplemented by hyperlinks to additional details.

4.    Special Appeal for Indexing Help - Commonwealth Electoral Roll (Qld) 1959 - 100 years on.

QFHS Publications Committee is appealing to all members for assistance with this special project to coincide with the celebrations of 150 years of the State of Queensland in 2009.

All you need is enthusiasm and a spreadsheet program. Don't worry if you are a one finger typist and may be too slow as many of our current indexers just use one finger. Instructions and an example will be given to each indexer - the team is always available to answer any questions you may have.

Just one bundle (20 pages) by each member would see us reach our target of publication in 2009. Can you contribute a page of indexing per day (60 names, address and occupation) for just 3 weeks to enable us to complete this significant project?

We currently have a dedicated team of indexers but to complete this project on time a much larger group will be required. So if you think you would like to help your society and contribute to the Q150 Celebrations please contact the Publications Committee at:  indexing@qfhs.org.au

15.    Digitising the 1911 Census for England and Wales

The National Archives (UK) has announced that the 1911 census for England and Wales will be digitised and made available online through a dedicated website at http://1911census.co.uk/  as well as through http://findmypast.com/

The 1911 census currently occupies 2 kilometres of shelving at The National Archives.  Once digitised, the census will take up an equally large 0.5 petabyte of computer memory or, physically, 800 data tapes.

From 2009 there will be a staggered release of the information in the 1911 census and from 3 January 2012 the public will have full access to the entire 1911 census.

Researchers anywhere in the world will be able to search across the fields of the census by name, address or The National Archives catalogue reference, and download high-resolution digital images. To read more on the 1911 Census digitising project, go to: http://1911census.co.uk/

16.    I'd Rather Do Genealogy!

Cooking? Cleaning? I'd rather do Genealogy!
They think that I should cook and clean, and be a model wife.
I tell them it's more interesting to study Grandpa's life.
They simply do not understand why I hate to go to bed . . .
I'd rather do two hundred years of research work instead.
Why waste the time we have on earth just snoring and asleep?
When we can learn of ancestors that sailed upon the deep?
We have priests, Rabbis, lawmen, soldiers, more than just a few.
And yes, there's many scoundrels, and a bootlegger or two.
How can a person find this life an awful drudge or bore?
When we can live the lives of all those folks who came before?
A hundred years from now of course, no one will ever know
Whether I did laundry, but they'll see our Tree and glow . . .
'Cause their dear old granny left for them, for all posterity,
not clean hankies and the like, but a finished family tree.
My home may be untidy, 'cause I've better things to do . . .
I'm checking all the records to provide us with a clue.
Old great granny's pulling roots and branches out with glee,
Her clothes ain't hanging out to dry; she's hung up on The Tree.

- Mel Oshins
