Computer Training Courses, 2010

Do you want to know how to make best use of the computer-based resources at the QFHS library? Perhaps you would like more information on family history research in the Internet.

In 2010, the Society will be holding two computer training courses to introduce the use of computers in family history research. Each course comprises two sessions with all sessions being held at the QFHS library at Gaythorne.

Please note these courses are now offered to non-members as well as QFHS members.

Saturday, 7 August from 9am - 12 Noon
'Introduction to Computer Resources'
This session will provide an overview of the computer network and how to make best use of the menu system. It will also focus on the CD-based resources at Gaythorne. The aim of the session is to familiarise participants with the layout of the computer room, the types of resources available, and how to access these resources.

Saturday, 4 September from 9am - 12 Noon
'Check These Out!'
This session will introduce just some of the many genealogical sites on the Internet. The session will cover the use of search engines, Internet security, the range of resources available, and how the information available is collected.

Please note that due to limitations in computer hardware, both of these sessions will be in a demonstration mode, as we do not have the facilities at this time for a hands-on approach. The numbers are limited to 16 places at each session. If you are not confident in the use of computers and the Internet, there is an optional introduction at starting at 8.30 am on both Saturday, 7 August and Saturday, 4 September.

The cost is $11 per session for members; however, if you are a library assistant, the cost is $2.75 per session. The non-members' fee is $15. Prices include GST. Should you wish to attend either or both of these sessions, please email Sue Reid on: smreid@tpg.com.au   Top of page

15. 1800s Melbourne Hospital Records to be Available on CD

Volunteers from the Genealogical Society of Victoria have helped compile a landmark new index of doctors' notes for 50,000 19th-century patients at (now Royal) Melbourne Hospital. While 451 ward books have now been transcribed, the remaining 1,500 ward books are still awaiting transcription.

The index is a joint venture between the RMH, the Public Record Office of Victoria and the Genealogical Society of Victoria. It covers 1856 to 1905, when RMH, now at Parkville, stood at the corner of Swanston and Lonsdale streets.

28. Looking for Photograph of Shepherd/Evans Marriage

The Wedding took place on 4 September, 1907 in Brisbane. The following was mentioned in the Brisbane Courier.

The marriage of Mr. Frank Shepherd and Miss Kate Evans, eldest daughter of Mr. Evans, Mulgrave Street Spring Hill took place in the Foresters' Hall Brunswick Street, Valley on Wednesday last. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory silk ornamented with lace and chiffon, and a bridal veil worn with a coronet of orange blossom. She carried a shower bouquet of white flowers and was attended by the Misses M and D Evans and J Hume as bridesmaids, all of whom wore cream voile frocks and white hats. Mr. J H Carmichael acted as best man and Mr. J Shepherd as groomsman. At the conclusion of the ceremony the guests were entertained by the bride's parents in the upper room of the hall at a wedding breakfast, and the usual toasts were drunk with musical honours.

29. Indonesian Census Discovers a 157-Year-Old Woman

30. Country Boy Who Married a Swedish Princess has Aristocratic Blood

Daniel Westling has been mocked for his provincial roots and country accent, and undergone careful grooming by courtiers, language tutors and a public relations agency ahead of his marriage to Crown Princess Victoria on June 19. Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf was reportedly initially hostile to the idea of his 32-year-old daughter marrying the commoner.

But, according to the genealogist Bjorn Engstrom, the 36-year-old former fitness instructor is descended from both Swedish and Finnish aristocracy. Mr Westling can count among his distant relatives members of parliament, courtiers and royal retainers. Though, less impressively, one of his female ancestors was convicted of witchcraft.
