Queensland State Archives Immigration Card Index
Visitors to the Public Search Room of the Queensland State Archives
(QSA) may have noticed that the Immigration Card Index has been reduced
considerably. QSA Volunteers have re-indexed Series ID 13086 (Registers
of Immigrant Ships' Arrivals 1848-1912). These indexes are now
available on the QSA website and so entries from this series have been
removed from the card index. Please remember to search both the new
indexes and the card index when searching for immigrants.
Try your luck for immigrants at the QSA website here: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp Top of page

ACT Historical Death Index 1930 - 1973
A little known listing of all the deaths that have occurred in the ACT
from 1930 to 1973 is available for free on this site. Set out as an
Excel spreadsheet, it isn't very user friendly, but it might help you
find that elusive ancestor.
You might hit the jackpot at: http://www.ors.act.gov.au/bdm/WebPages/bdm_deaths.html

Public Record Office Victoria Wiki
Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is trialling its new wiki that
will enable researchers to provide comments, extra information and
their own linkages about and around records held by PROV. Like
Wikipedia, the PROV wiki is on a website anybody can log into,
contribute toward and edit. Its primary aim is to offer you the
opportunity to contribute your knowledge of, and research into the
collections held by PROV in order to enrich the information we can make
available to the research community.
Instructions are included on how to participate and add your
information to the wiki. The PROV wiki can be accessed at http://www.wiki.prov.vic.gov.au/index.php
Top of page
12.
Public Record Office Victoria Probate and Shipping Indexes
PROV's volunteers have been busy preparing the next instalment of the
outwards immigration index 1887-1896 adding another 290,348 names to
the index (total range now 1852 to 1896 with 797,460 outward passengers
named). The volunteers are continuing to index the series which ends in
1923.
Volunteers from the Victorian Association of Family History
Organisations (VAFHO) and FamilySearch have completed the first stage
of a collaborative project with PROV to index probates in Victoria. The
first stage 1841-1925 is now online and allows researchers to search
for wills and probates by family name, place, occupation and date and
then to link to the digitised image of the will and/or probate file.
There are 214,545 names in the index and in 2008 the FamilySearch
volunteers digitised 4,724,965 pages of will and probate files which
are progressively being made available on the PROV website free of
charge.
Both the shipping and probate indexes are available online at http://www.wiki.prov.vic.gov.au/index.php
(see links under New Features)
and also via the How Do I?
section on the home page.
13. Irish
Census Records
The National Archives of Ireland has launched the next phase of an
online census research tool for the Irish counties of Antrim, Kerry,
and Down for 1911. The census records for all counties for 1911 and for
1901 will be made available online throughout 2009. Library and
Archives Canada signed an agreement with the National Archives of
Ireland in December 2005 and the two institutions have been working to
make the censuses of Ireland for 1901 and 1911 accessible online, free
of charge. Library and Archives Canada's contribution included
digitizing microfilm reels, linking images to the database and making
the records searchable by name.
Making these records accessible online will give genealogists and
historians around the world the chance to explore the age, occupation,
religion and marital status of individuals. It will also allow research
on Irish society of the early 20th century.
To visit the Irish Census Online and the virtual exhibition on life in
Ireland in 1911, go to: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ Top of page
14.
Irish Transportation Database 1791 - 1868

were transported to the Australian colonies from Ireland and is
available on the National Archives of Ireland web site at: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/transportation/search01.html
15. Images of

England's listed buildings, recorded at the turn of the 21st century.
You can view over 300,000 images of England's built heritage from lamp
posts to public conveniences, phone boxes to toll booths, mile stones
to gravestones, as well as thousands of bridges, historic houses and
churches.

advanced search facility requiring registration. Have fun at: http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/default.aspx Top of page

Non Parochial and Non Conformist records Online
The official U.K. National Archives site for Non Parochial and Non
Conformist records has recently added over 600,000 records of birth,
baptism, marriage and burial. These have not previously been searchable
online and contain images of birth and baptismal records. Among the
more extensive collections in this series are the registers of the
British Lying-in Hospital at Holborn; these provide detailed maternity
records covering the period 1749 to 1868.
The records can include the following information: The Date and order
of admission, Woman's and Husband's Name, Occupation, Woman's Age,
Parish, Time of Reckoning, Came in, Went out on leave, Returned,
Delivered, Child Baptised, Woman Discharged, Recommender's Name.
Both the original record of the hospital entry and the baptism images
can be viewed, printed or downloaded plus the details viewed and a
small tree printed. In addition, there are further non conformist
records of births and baptisms.
The rest of the series contains the archive of the Russian Orthodox
Church in London, 1721-1927. The records include not only registers of
births, marriages, deaths and conversions, but also comprehensive
general records on the day-to-day workings of the church. The usual
language is Russian, with some Greek; there are a few documents such as
certificates, letters and passports in English, French and German.
These records are freely searchable on http://www.BMDregisters.co.uk/ Top of page

Scottish Handwriting Website
This website offers online tuition in palaeography (reading old
handwriting) for historians, genealogists and other researchers who
have problems reading manuscript historical records written in Scotland
in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The primary purpose of this site is to provide online tuition in
palaeography in the context of early modern Scottish historical
documents. It is aimed mainly at those whose research involves reading
Scottish historical records written in the period 1500-1750, although
some assistance is given with 19th century writing too.
Whatever your level of palaeographical ability, the interactive
tutorials and weekly posers will help you study the characteristics of
Scottish handwriting and improve or maintain your reading speed. There
are also links to other online palaeography websites, and details of
dictionaries, glossaries and other useful publications.

1852 New Year Resolutions solve genealogical mysteries
It is New Year's Eve 1852 and Henry Hydenwell sits at his desk by
candlelight.
He dips his quill pen in ink and begins to writes his New Year's
resolutions.
- No man is truly well-educated unless he learns to spell his name
at least three different ways within the same document. I resolve to
give the appearance of being extremely well-educated in the coming year.
- I resolve to see to it that all of my children will have the same
names that my ancestors have used for six generations in a row.
- My age is no one's business but my own. I hereby resolve to never
list the same age or birth year twice on any document.
- I resolve to have each of my children baptised in a different
church - either in a different faith or in a different parish. Every
third child will not be baptised at all or will be baptised by an
itinerant minister who keeps no records.
- I resolve to move to a new town, new county or new state at least
once every 10 years - just before those pesky enumerators come around
asking silly questions.
- I will make every attempt to reside in counties and towns where
no vital records are maintained or where the courthouse burns down
every few years.
- I resolve to join an obscure religious cult that does not believe
in record keeping or in participating in military service.
- When the tax collector comes to my door, I'll loan him my pen,
which has been dipped in rapidly fading blue ink.
- I resolve that if my beloved wife Mary should die, I will marry
another Mary.
- I resolve not to make a will. Who needs to spend money on a
lawyer?
- I resolve to leave lots of family photographs, but never to
inscribe the names or relationships of those in the pictures.
- In the above manner, I will enshrine myself and my progeny to the
whims of all those descendants who wish me to be more like they believe
they are. Top of page
