For anyone wanting to know the history of Ipswich, this book is a must read. It was published in 1910 to commemorate the progress of the town.
The area was first explored by European colonists in 1826. In 1827, the first convicts and overseers arrived to mine the area, and the town that was built around this industry became known as Limestone. In 1843, the settlement officially became known as Ipswich, making it the oldest provincial city in Queensland. Ipswich was proclaimed a municipality in 1860, and became a city in 1904.
Complete with hundreds of photographs of people, buildings and scenes from the town, this history starts with the exploration of the region, then continues on with government and elections, reminiscences, pioneer settlements, railway and water supply, show associations, the primary industries of the region (coal mining, cotton, wool etc), as well as churches and schools.
Fully searchable, this is a very useful book for anyone with family connections in this region or interest in Queensland's early history.

Queensland became an Australian colony on 6 June 1859 after separation from New South Wales, Brisbane was chosen as its capital. Written in 1909, Barton's Jubilee history of Queensland 1859-1909: A record of political, industrial and social development from the landing of the first explorers to the close of 1909, takes a thorough look over the fifty years that had passed since its inception, and details all the political, industrial and social development in both words and pictures.
To make it a complete history, this work actually begins with the landing of the early explorers and the discovery of Moreton Bay and Brisbane River as well as early settlement. This is followed by the struggle for independence, the history of the government in Queensland, and the City of Brisbane. Divided into 15 chapters, each covers a different topic, such as ports, churches of Brisbane, social and religious, pastoral, agricultural and mining, manufacturers, reminiscences, a chronology ... and so much more.
With over 300 photographs included in this 402 page book, it shows you the history visually. Many are of people and businesses, as well as some of scenes. A valuable record for those with an interest in Queensland and those involved with its history from colony to state 1859-1909.

The Mount Morgan Gold Mine Queensland, 1893 details the mine works and treatment of ore up to October 1892. The narrative starts with an examination of Rockhampton, the nearest port, the Central Railway and the regional shipping scene together with revenue from imports and exports through the Port of Rockhampton from 1882. A study of mining enterprises in the district up to and including the Mount Morgan discovery provides the reader with a background to mining in Queensland although it is focussed on gold recovery.
The establishment of the mining company by Fred, Edwin and Thomas Morgan, and a nephew of Fred, and John Ferguson who collectively held a half of the shares. The other half being held by Thomas Skarratt Hall, W Hall, William Knox D'Arcy and William Pattison.
Features of the mine are described in detail including the aerial tramway and the book concludes with some very useful maps and plans of the mine.
Old historical records are a valuable resource for local, family and social historians as well as for researchers in other fields of Australian history. They provide information on the environment experienced by the residents of the time and how they lived, as well as their occupations.

The primary aim of this book is to present a 'concise history of incidents' occurring in the early times of Moreton Bay.
While it doesn't include listings of early pioneers of the region, it does cover the exploration of the region, settlement, aborigines, Dr Lang, Governor Fitzroy, wrecks in the region and numerous other topics, including the imminent (at the time), separation of Queensland from New South Wales, which took place in 1859.
Also covered is a section on Australia, which gives a very brief overview of the explorers who found Australia, and early settlement, together with details of various Governors of the time. There are also chapters on Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. Each of these discusses the founding and settlement, together with early Governors of the region.
This is an informative guide for those researching Australian social history in the 1770-1859 era, and the maps included will add to the usefulness of this book.

On 10 December 1859 Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony to New South Wales. This book
gives a review of the progress made during Queensland's first fifty years.
It is divided into four parts – Our Natal Year, Natal Year to Jubilee, Our Jubilee Year and
The Primary Industries.
•Our Natal Year: reviews the birth of Queensland, the initiation of responsible government, the first session of parliament, and Queensland in 1860
•Natal Year to Jubilee: covers the legislature, public finance, Crown Lands legislation, appropriation of land revenue, local government and public instruction
•Our Jubilee Year: a general review of the state and examination of the federal outlook following federation just eight years earlier
•The Primary Industries: this part examines the importance of the pastoral industry, agriculture, the sugar industry and mining during the past fifty years.
FIFTY years ago an emphatic expression of confidence in the self-governing competence of the
people of North-eastern Australia was given by the British Government of Lord Derby. On 6th
June, 1859, Queen Victoria in Council adopted Letters Patent-which had been already approved
in draft on 13th May "erecting Moreton Bay into a colony under the name of Queensland," and
appointing Sir George Ferguson Bowen to be "Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of the
same."

|
Published in 1893, this book collects together a series of letters written between December
1892 and February 1893 by Flora Louise Shaw, The Times Special Correspondent.
There are six letters:
•Queensland (Brisbane, 10 November) – an overview of the whole colony
•The Sugar Industry in Queensland – a look at the industry historically and in the present; the scanned book included a loose newsclipping from The Times, 22 September 1894, which refers back to the original letter on the Sugar Industry
•The Mineral Wealth of Queensland (Rockhampton) – discusses the mining regions of the colony: including gold at the Charters Towers, Mount Morgan, Gympie, Croydon, Etheridge, Ravenswood, Palmer, Russell, Hodgkinson, Bowen, Cloncurry and Cooktown fields; copper, lead and silver at Chillagoe and Herberton and tin at Eureka Creek
•Pastoral Queensland (Blackall, Western Queensland) (2 letters) – a reflection on the Queensland bush and its contrast to London: the temperature, rainfall, isolation, floods, animals, timber, stations. The author notes that “You are permeated with sunshine ... the invigorating smell of the earth is always in your nostrils”
•The Queensland Separation Question – a look at the question of the separation of
northern and central Queensland from southern Queensland. The elements of size and diversity
of climatic conditions form the basis of the demand for separation by the North and Central
divisions. Before passing on to the details by which the demand is supported, it is worth
while to glance at the map and realise that the sub-division which is asked for would create
three colonies, each of them, roughly speaking, of about the size of France.

When Queensland became its own colony in December 1859, John Dunmore Lang (1799-1878), a Scottish Presbyterian minister, was an advocate on the emigration possibilities that it offered, particularly in the cotton-growing and sugar industries.
He not only lectured extensively on this topic, but also produced this book, Queensland, Australia to let people know about the colony and what it had to offer.
Queensland, Australia covers topics such as geographical features, rivers, the natural and artificial productions of the land, various settlements, climate, government, Aborigines and much more.
Ideal for those researching Queensland’s history, as it provides an insight into Queensland as it was in 1861.

Nomenclature of Queensland railway stations (1914)
A 1914 list of all named railway stations in Queensland listed on their appropriate line and with
the meaning of their name. Such a publication may well be the only surviving source for this
information.
Arranged in alphabetical order of the station name, the information provided is listed in three
columns: station, railway and meaning of name. Find out which railway stations have been named
after local families in the region, or rivers and creek. There are others named after eminent
personalities, as well as those named after a turtle and another after a pidgeon. A small book,
but it is interesting reading.
