Central Queensland 1914

‘Compiled and issued by the Queensland Government’ in 1914, this book was written to advertise Central Queensland to the outside world. It advertises the region’s ‘illimitable’ possibilities in its ‘marvellous pastoral and mineral resources, its unbound agricultural possibilities and its scenic beauties.’ In doing so it sets forth a detailed account of settlers life in Central Queensland.

‘Central Queensland’ has many different sections containing statistics and information on: the geography of the land, its industries, pastoral, grain and fruit farming, public services, infrastructure, mining, water resources, education, immigration and the experience of settlers.

It gives information on everything a prospective settler would want to know about the area and thus provides very valuable information for the genealogist or historian on the life and experiences of early Queensland settlers.

Gladstone colony (1898)

Port Curtis was originally settled in 1847 as a penal colony by the New South Wales government, but was abandoned in 1848. The area was resettled by free settlers in 1853, and in 1863 it became a municipality, and was renamed Gladstone after William Ewart Gladstone, the British Colonial Secretary (and later British Prime Minister) who was dealing with the process of setting up the new colony in Northern Australia.

The township developed on the site of the original penal colony and for some time it was promoted as a future capital for the newly established colony of Queensland.

The Gladstone Colony: An Unwritten Chapter of Australian History was written in 1898, and covers the town's history up until the time of publication. A wonderful record of the history of this Queensland city, you will find information on the founding of the town, as well as its growth and development, together with details of pioneer squatters, the gold rush as well as details of Gladstone as it was in 1898 and plenty more.

This historical record available on fully-searchable CD will be useful not only for those with connections to the pioneers of the region, but also those who are interested in the social history of Gladstone.

The town of Gympie, north of Brisbane, and was originally settled for grazing purposes, but in 1867 the area became prominent when James Nash discovered gold. At the time Queensland was suffering from a severe economic depression and the discovery probably saved the colony from bankruptcy.

This souvenir book was produced to celebrate the town's Diamond Jubilee in 1927, and details the history of the town, starting with the early history and the 'momentous discovery' of gold. This is followed by information on the schools, churches, societies, sports clubs, Gympie's mayors, as well as other locals who played a part in Queensland's political scene. This book also includes information on the mining and agricultural pioneers, as well as many advertisements from local businesses, and numerous photographs of Gympie throughout this period.

This is a valuable record for those with an interest in not only the early pioneers of this Queensland town, but also for those whose interest is social and economic history.

History of Maryborough

This is a fascinating history of the town of Maryborough, which is situated to the north of Brisbane near the Queensland coast. It coverers the years 1850 to 1895, and deals with topics such as early settlement and the 'New Maryborough' in 1896. It also has details about various places surrounding such as Fraser Island and Gympie as well as various local railways and other nearby features.

This book also includes a biographical section listing "Pioneers of Wide Bay, Old Colonists, Living and Dead". For most people listed within this section there is at least a paragraph or two of details, however some are up to several pages long.

The latter parts of the book deal with the education, religion, societies and clubs of the town, and well as the local industries. The suburban and country townships section near the end, is almost a mini gazetteer ... which may help you find that small (or now non-existent) place in Queensland you were looking for. The book is completed with the inclusion of numerous photographs both of people and places.
