Queensland 1900

Historical-biographical publications were popular in the late Victorian, Edwardian period and comprised of a regional history together with biographies of notable citizens whose contribution made the region successful. As such, these publications can prove useful to historians looking for contemporary records. The downside is of course that the vast majority of people are not listed but if your ancestor held even a minor civic or government post such as a councillor or town clerk, these publications are worth following up. Apart from their name you can expect to find details of their origins and achievements that have given rise to their inclusion in the publication.

Biographical dictionaries are privately published and occur across the globe representing regions and large towns. They may include material of a nature often found in almanacs. As such they are useful and may provide that essential piece of background information about an individual that opens up new lines of research.

Queensland Men of the Time 1885-1900

From 1885 Pughs Almanac & Queensland Directory included a "Men of the Time" section each year. This CD gathers 16 years of these [1885 to 1900] into one handy collection. These publications were popular in the late Victorian, Edwardian period and are mainly comprised of biographies of notable citizenry and as such can prove very useful to historians looking for contemporary records prepared at the grassroots level about people. The downside is of course that the vast majority of people are not listed but if your ancestor held even a minor civic or government post such as a councillor or town clerk, these publications are worth following up. Apart from their name you can expect to find details of their origins and their achievements that have given rise to their inclusion in the publication. The entries range from a few lines to a page or more. This particular set of 16 volumes only lists the pages containing the biographies.

An example of the type of material available:

DAY, WILLIAM HENRY, Second Police Magistrate. A native of Bath, England, born on May 13th, 1828, and educated at St Gregory's College, Downside, Bath. He arrived in Melbourne, in December, 1854, and in this colony in the following year. He was a clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office from 1859 to 1862, and afterwards Clerk of Petty Sessions until 1874, when he was appointed Acting Police Magistrate while Mr Rawlins was on leave and subsequently previous to Mr Pimnock’s appointment as Police Magistrate. He received the appointment of Water Police Magistrate in 1883, and also Second Police Magistrate in 1884. Mr Day was a member of the Education Board when the latter was first established.

Queenslanders Who Fought in the Great War 1914-18

A wonderful record of 2468 men and some women involved in the Great War 1914-18, mainly those who actually served overseas. 2334 portraits are included. The biographical particulars were supplied by the relatives and personal friends of the men who proceeded on active service abroad. The photographs in every case have also been furnished either directly or indirectly by the relatives and friends.

The following information is often given:

• Record of military service,
• where and when enlisted
• training and battalions
• where and when sailed
• details of service overseas
• medals awarded
• parents, wives, and often children
• birth place and school/s attended - often in other states or countries
• occupation before enlisting
... many other service and personal details may be given

A Sample Biography
ANDERSON, John William Gordon, Private, No. 2615, 42nd Battalion. Born at Bundaberg. Educated at Barolin State School and Maryborough Grammar School. Son of Andrew and Christina Anderson. Prior to enlisting was on the office staff at Moreton Central Sugar Mill, at Nambour. Enlisted on 1st July, 1915, and was rejected. Again enlisted September 9th, 1916. Went into camp in October, 1916. Sailed with 6th Reinforcements, 47th Battalion, on October 27th, 1916. Arrived in England, and was attached to 12th T.B. Band. Went to France on 7th December, 1917, and joined 42nd Battalion January 3rd, 1918. Served with battalion till May 25th, when he was severely mustard gassed at Villiers Brettoneaux. Rejoined his battalion on July 13th, and went through the "Big Push," starting 8th August, and was again gassed on August 25th. Sent to England, and was in training when the Armistice was signed. Left England 18th December, 1918, and arrived in Brisbane on 14th February, 1919.

The re-issue of this record on CD will be a marvelous resource for family, local and military historians. But it serves a further purpose - the stated hope of the compiler that the record of these men and women "will be handed down from generation to generation as historic proof of the noble self sacrifice of the Australian fighting forces in the Great War."

Queenslanders as we see 'em 1915

The Preface of this book starts off with '... this little work might well be called 'The Cartoonist's Who's Who in Queensland'. The aim of its publishers was to issue a book that would be a novel and valued souvenir.

The compilers have picked out 180 of Queensland's noted citizens, obtained portraits, then added in suitable embellishments by the cartoonists in such style as to remind subjects, their friends, and those in the future, of what they were along with their occupations, and their idiosyncrasies. Each page includes biographical details of the noted citizen, giving name, date and where born, parents names, past occupation/s, clubs, recreation and home address.

Occupations of those chosen for this volume range from: business director, architect, photographer, secretary, carrier, hotel proprietor, grazier, solicitor, barrister-at-law, conveyancer, merchant, dentist, Justice of the Peace, newspaper proprietor, mayor and many more.

This is a useful guide for finding about those of note in Queensland in the early 20th century.
